POSTER OF THE MONTH:
Women of the Oaxaca Uprising
Celebrate People's History
The Celebrate People's History poster project began in 1998 and has produced over 50 beautiful two color posters by different artists that each highlight an historical example of popular struggle and resistance. The Just Seeds Artists' Cooperative commissions each poster and distributes them through their website. Inkworks had the exciting opportunity this spring to print its first CPH poster. Tim Simons, a designer and illustrator based in Oakland and collective member of Inkworks, was asked by Just Seeds to create a poster for the series. He chose to work with Barucha Peller who participated in the 2006 uprising in Oaxaca, Mexico as an independent journalist to create a poster highlighting the role of women in that movement. MORE
FROM THE ARCHIVES, 1978:
Out Loud!
A Collection of New Songs by Women
In 1978 Inkworks published a book of 50 songs from the Women's movement, some of which had never been transcribed before. The book was titled Out Loud! and was one of Inkworks most ambitious early publishing projects. Copies of the book are still available at the shop and feature beautiful photos along with the music. Below is a short look back at the project from activist and songwriter Bonnie Lockhart who was one of the main people behind the book. Her words are followed by the original introduction and a sample from the book with one of Bonnie's songs, Still Ain't Satisfied. MORE
